Sawnee Campground is a cute little Army Corps of Engineers site located on the South side of Lake near right beside Buford Dam. It is one of the prettiest campgrounds on Lake Lanier and is centrally located in between Cumming and Flowery Branch, Georgia. About 1/2 of the sites are big rig capable and the review below includes pics of all sites that we believe a 40+ footer could get into and part relatively level. If a site were available this is a campground we would consider going to.

This review is part of the Lake Lanier Big Rig project we are working on to document all the Big Rig Parks on Lake Lanier

Example of a spacious Super Site on a wide field of grass

  • Additional Information: All of the roads in the park are paved. Parts of this park are wide. The foliage and trees are heavy so ad we identified sites, we kept in mind figuring out which sites would not limit a big rig and which sites would be level. The Sites have identified have adequate space between them,  The park is locked up from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Big Rig Enabled Sites: 9,13-20,22-25,31,36,51

Things to Do in the Area

Sawnee Campground is located about 6 miles out of Cumming, Ga and 8 miles out of Flowery Branch. There are restaurants, supermarkets, and pretty much whatever you want withing 3 miles of the campground. Besides the standard lake stuff here are some recommendations of things to check out.

Restaurants

  • In Cumming we do not have many exceptional restaurants but here is where we like to eat. For Italian – Provino’s is quite good. For a nice sports bar with good bar food – Taco Mac will never let you down. For exceptional German food check out Gasthous – sit out on the patio it is awesome.

Things to Do

  • This is a remote campground on the lake so obviously plenty of lake things to do. You can rent a boat from Lake Lanier Boats or check out Boatbound – there are several listings out there as well. If you do go out on the lake the best restaurant is Fishtails and you do not want to miss Sunset Cove – a unique experience in itself.
  • Lake Lanier water park is a pretty cool water park right on the lake and we love going there.
  • Lake Lanier is famous for its Bass and Striper Fishing. We have caught some huge stripers with Shane Watson Guide service.
  • Also under the dam there is supposedly good trout fishing – on my list of things to do . RiverthroughAtlanta is who we are considering using
  • Day trips up to Helen, Ga – The German capital of Georgia or hike the falls at Amicaloa Falls

Final Thoughts

Sawnee Campground is a small eclectic place to stay in a very pretty part of Lake Lanier. It is centrally located and all of the spots are right on the lake. If we could get the right spot, we would definitely go there.
